John Hettler
Principal, Founder
B.A., University of Richmond
M.S., Nova Southeastern University
John’s journey in education began in the public school system as a special education teacher, where he quickly discovered a deep curiosity about reading—and why some students struggled with it. That curiosity sparked a passion, which led him down the path of learning everything he could about dyslexia and how to best support students who learn differently.
Armed with a Master’s degree in Varying Exceptionalities and specialized training in reading interventions for dyslexic students, John co-founded The Reading Station in 2006—an after-school tutoring program designed to help students with dyslexia unlock their potential. The program took off, and just a few years later, in 2009, Sea Of Strengths Academy was born!
John teamed up with co-founder Susan Stevens to create a one-of-a-kind learning environment where students with learning differences could thrive, grow, and feel truly understood. Today, John serves as Principal of Sea Of Strengths Academy. You’ll often find him in the mornings leading OG (Orton-Gillingham) reading groups, where his passion for helping kids become confident readers continues to shine.

Meryl Rizzo
Lead Teacher

Meryl brings a wealth of experience—and a whole lot of heart—to Sea of Strengths Academy! Before joining our team, she spent many years teaching English, History, Theater, and Speech in middle and high schools. Her passion for working with students who learn differently was sparked by her own journey as a parent of children with learning differences.
“I can’t imagine anything more fulfilling than helping students achieve goals they once thought were out of reach,” she says, and she means it! Every day in Ms. Meryl’s classroom is a fresh opportunity to explore subjects she loves, inspire confidence, and cheer on progress, big or small.
Meryl is trained in Orton-Gillingham and uses this powerful, multi-sensory approach to strengthen students’ reading and spelling skills. She’s also a lifelong learner herself regularly attending national conferences and trainings focused on language-based learning disabilities to stay on top of the latest strategies.
Caring, creative, dedicated, and full of energy, Ms. Meryl is a champion for her students and a true SOSA gem!
